You may have notices people standing with protest signs in front of your local Staples office supply stores. Some of them may have been wearing a uniform, others not. They are not staples employees on strike. They are Postal Service employees.
The Postal Service employees are protesting a move by the U.S. Postal Service to offer customers the added convenience of tasking care of your mailing needs at a local Staples, thereby giving you more locations to be served. The Postal Service is also closing post offices. The Postal Employees protesting in front of Staples are not protesting the offering of postal services at Staples but instead, the fact that your postal needs will not be served by a Post Office employee but by a Staples employee. The U.S. Postal service is, in fact using Staples as an outside contractor so they can let go more of their own U.S. Postal Service employees.
One of the Postal Employees Union complaints is that your mail needs will not be met by qualified union workers. It also claims that the privacy & security of your letters and packages will be compromised. I do believe that the Postal Employees Union has a legitimate claim in regards to the privacy & security of your letters and packages. They claim that letters and packages are more secure in a postal facility in restricted areas where only postal employees are allowed to be.
As a Staples customer myself, I have witnessed the shoddy security Staples implements for UPS customers (they implements a UPS shipping years ago, I am unsure if it still is in place or will continue). Packages were just stored behind the counter near the exit doors, and when they were stacked up high enough, it was only personal integrity that prevented people from reaching over the counter and stealing a package or two while an oblivious Staples employee was serving another customer or had their back turned.
So before you go to your local Staples to get your package posted, just remember the real issues. The Postal Service is couching a move to cut costs and lay off it’s own employees as a move to improve customer choice. The Postal Employees Union is trying to protect workers and save jobs. Staples is making money with a fat contract from the Postal Service, not properly training employees and hosting slip shod security while claiming to improve customer choice. Well, if you are the customer. Choose wisely.
