It’s a good practice to review your life periodically to see where you are in regards to where you want to be. We all have dreams. We all have goals. Reviewing your life periodically can help you clarify whether or not you are achieving them. First, take a look at the seven major areas that make up your life and assess where or not you are satisfied with them. The seven areas are food, shelter, family life, social life, close friendships, love life, working life and growth.
You should ask yourself questions about each of the areas of your life. Are your food and shelter needs taken care of? Do you have good family relations? Do you have a social network that can support you? Do you have any really close friends who you can confide in? How is your love life? How is your work life? Are you in a career you love or just in a job? Are you growing or just staying the same?
Where you are in each of these areas in reference to your happiness, usually depends on how close you are to goals you had made previously. People who are usually happy are either satisfied with their progress towards the goals they have set or they have no goals. People who are unhappy with any particular areas of dissatisfied with their life overall usually are not satisfied with their progress in achieving their goals.
When we are children, we often have no real responsibilities. We don’t have to earn money to buy food or pay the rent. Because of this, when we are children, we can dream big because there are no obstacles to stop us. We imagine the life we want to have when we become adults. As we grow, the responsibilities pile up. We need to get good grades in school. We want to make enough money to buy something we desire. We get married and have to raise a family. The accompanying stresses also pile on. All of them grind us down little by little until we either have to alter our original dream of what our life would be like or defer the date we expect to achieve our goal.
In reality, where you are in life is where you actually want to be. This is because you have, all through the process made choices that affect your progress towards achieving your goal. You have made choices that help you towards reaching your goal and you have made choices which have impeded you from reaching your goal. In some instances, the choices you made that impeded you from reaching your goal were choices you couldn’t help. In some situations the choice which impeded you was the ONLY choice you could have made. They may not have been technically your fault but you did make the choice and have to live with its consequences. It may not seem fair but life happens and the choices you make determine where you are in life.
If, after your life review, you find you need to improve in a couple of areas, begin to plan, step by step, how you will improve. What work needs to be done? How much effort needs to be applied? What time, finances or education needs to be changed to allow you to put the time and effort to achieve growth in the area you want to improve? Finally, if all else fails, give yourself a reality check. If you keep on working towards a goal and never make sufficient progress, then perhaps the goal is unrealistic. It may not be impossible to achieve it but given the time, effort and education you have, or have to devote to it, it may be unrealistic.
We all have goals. We all have dreams. We don’t all achieve them. Those that do achieve their goals often plan work and progress incrementally towards them. They put the appropriate amount of time and effort into them. They make sacrifices. They make the choices that support achieving the goal. A Periodic Life Review can help put your progress in focus and by doing so, empower you to achieve your goals.
