What is Cultureblend?

You may have never heard of it before but you will be seeing examples all around you. What is it? It’s Cultureblend. There are already elements of it in art and literature and as globalization continues to progress you will likely see more of it and it’s likely to spread beyond art and literature to other sectors of the global cultural & economic economy

Cultureblend was created sometime after the year 2,000 by author Mark Wilkins to explain a phenomenon he noticed occurring in some of his writing. When he was creating the short story “The Commitment: which can be currently found in his book  A Week’s Worth of Fiction 3, he noticed that he took elements from both African and Arabic cultures, mixed them with the concepts of male and female dominated societies and created the fictional nation of Dadastan which is where the story is set.

The story has elements that are familiar to different cultures but completely different from any of them. The fact that what was created is different from anything that existed before is what makes the story interesting and draws people in with the familiar elements used to attract them in the first place.

Wilkins coined the term Cultureblend to describe this phenomenon, of combining the elements of two or more cultures to create a totally new culture (which in this case is totally ficitious). He also believed that this cultureblend phenomenon was present in various commodity sectors besides literature, such as art, music, food and fashion. Wilkins looked at the culture of Aztlan as an exemplar.

Aztlan is a Cultureblend of ancient Aztec history and Mexican American Chicano culture. Aztlan refers to the desire to take back the lands of Northern Mexico taken by the U.S. after the Mexican American War. The belief behind Aztlan is that Chcanos have a primordial right to the lands and that it should be given back to set up an independent nation. This Cultureblend phenomenon is evidenced in both art and literature.
Aztlan is not an example of fusion. It doesn’t merely take Aztec history and Mexican American culture and fuse them together in a “this is part of our roots and we’re incorporating it into our current culture” kind of way. Instead, it takes an element from ancient Aztec culture (the historical place of Aztlan) and creates a place in Mexican American Chicano culture which expresses its desires. The Aztlan referred to in Chicano Art and Literature doesn’t actually exist outside of the Chicano culture and has helped create Chicano culture. It is, in fact, a hallmark of that culture which is itself a Cultureblend of Mexican American and indigenous cultures from within Mexico.
Early on, Wilkins encountered people confusing Cultureblend with Fusion, He got several people asking him why he created the term Cultureblend instead of just calling the phenomenon he noticed Fusion? To help answer these questions, Wilkins looked to dictionary definitions of the word Fusion.

Fusion, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is a merging of diverse, distinct, or separate elements into a unified whole. Cultureblend, according to the Urban Dictionary, is a style of creating art, literature, music, food or fashion that blends elements of two or more different cultures in a way that creates a new and different culture.
Wilkins further explained how Cultureblend differs from Fusion by using the following comparison. Fusion is like taking branches from an apple tree and grafting on branches of a pear tree. Doing so creates an Apple-Pear tree, that is, a tree which has both apples and pears growing on it. Cultureblend is like taking the genetic material from an apple and a pear and creating an entirely new fruit which has the outside of a pear but tastes like an apple. You might call a pearple.
While fusion creates a whole with elements of different things it merely merges them to create a hybrid of both of them. It doesn’t create something new and different from all of its elements. It doesn’t have to refer to culture. Cultureblend refers only to cultural elements. It creates something new and different out of the blending. It is the cultural element and the creating of something new and different from all of the elements that created it that makes Cultureblend different from Fusion.

Mr. Wilkins is still actively seeking examples of the Cultureblend phenominon especially in food and fasion. If you notice any elements of Cultureblend in food or fashion, feel free to write Mr. Wilkins at: markwilkinsauthor@gmail.com

The Tweet that Could Cause President Trump to be Impeached

By The Prophet of Life

Donald Trump is famous or perhaps infamous for his tweets. He was an avid user of social media during his presidential campaign and he continues to send tweets as The U.S. President. Mr. Trump has sent many inflammatory tweets. He has sent some misinformed tweets.  He has even sent some amended tweets. An amended tweet is like the one he sent stating that the tape of him saying that he frequently grabs women by their genitals was doctored and that it never actually happened. A tweet he sent recently could cost him the Presidency.

Mr. Trump recently sent a tweet stating that he fired his National Security Advisor Former General Michael Flynn because he lied to the FBI. This is a departure from Mr. Trump’s statements about why he fired Flynn at the time of the firing. At that time, Mr. Trump indicated that he fired him because Flynn lied to the Vice President. Lying to the Vice President is not a crime. It is, however, unethical and a cause for being fired. Lying to the FBI is a crime.

Mr. Trump’s tweet could be construed as either a Freudian slip or an admission of guilt. Either way, they indicate that he may have known that Flynn lied to the FBI when he was fired. Before Flynn was fired, Trump had, according to former FBI Director James B. Comey, asked him (Comey) to go easy on Flynn at the time that Mr. Comey was in charge of investigating Russian influence on the 2016 Presidential Election and the Trump Campaign. That could be considered Obstruction of Justice.

According to Wex Legal Dictionary, “Obstruction of justice is defined in the omnibus clause of 18 U.S.C. § 1503, which provides that “whoever . . . . corruptly or by threats or force, or by any threatening letter or communication, influences, obstructs, or impedes, or endeavors to influence, obstruct, or impede, the due administration of justice, shall be (guilty of an offense).” Persons are charged under this statute based on allegations that a defendant intended to interfere with an official proceeding, by doing things such as destroying evidence, or interfering with the duties of jurors or court officers.

A person obstructs justice when they have a specific intent to obstruct or interfere with a judicial proceeding. For a person to be convicted of obstructing justice, they must not only have the specific intent to obstruct the proceeding, but the person must know (1) that a proceeding was actually pending at the time; and (2) there must be a nexus between the defendant’s endeavor to obstruct justice and the proceeding, and the defendant must have knowledge of this nexus.

  • 1503 applies only to federal judicial proceedings. Under § 1505, however, a defendant can be convicted of obstruction of justice by obstructing a pending proceeding before Congress or a federal agency. A pending proceeding could include an informal investigation by an executive agency.”

According to a memo that Director Comey wrote shortly after an Oval Office meeting he had with Trump in February, President Trump told FBI Director Comey to “Shut down the investigation into Flynn.” The memo further states that President Trump told Comey “I hope you can let this go.”

If Mr. Trump did, in fact, fire Flynn for lying to the FBI and he did so either before or soon after he had told FBI Director Comey to shut down the investigation on Flynn, then that could be considered Obstruction of Justice.

Obstruction of Justice is, among other things, an attempt to impede or alter an investigation that could lead to the prosecution of a crime. The President is the Chief Executive of every government department including the Department of Justice. If Mr. Trump knew that Flynn lied to the FBI and told the Chief Investigator of the FBI probe into collusion between The Trump Campaign and the Russian Government then that could be considered an attempt to impeded and / or alter that investigation thereby being an Obstruction of Justice. Further, because President Trump was Director Comey’s boss at the time, it could be considered an act of coercion.

Obstruction of Justice could be considered an impeachable offense. It is a crime and a felony to boot. There are those who have said that the President is immune from being charged with obstruction of Justice. That, however, is based on ignorance. Just ask anyone who knows about U.S. President Richard Nixon. One of his articles of impeachment was Obstruction of Justice. Nixon resigned to avoid an impeachment vote. President Nixon, however, had a Senate with a Democratic Party majority to deal with.

If Mr. Trump is put into the same position he may not choose to resign, because while Nixon had a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, Mr. Trump has the luxury of a Republican majority in both the House & the Senate. It may be unlikely that Republicans will vote to impeach a sitting President. If the Democrats get a majority during the 2018 elections, Mr. Trump might feel differently. Most impeachment votes are party driven and Senators often vote along party lines. President Trump is, at this moment just six Senate votes away from impeachment. The 2018 Senate elections could spell disaster for his Presidency.

The World Will Not End in 2018

There are several prominent prophecies about 2018 being a year of bad omens. One links a prophecy from the Bible’s Book of Revelations about a virgin giving birth as the dawning of the dawning time of tribulation. Others interpret it as the birth of the Antichrist. Don’t believe the hype.

It will not trigger the birth of the antichrist. It will not trigger the beginning of tribulations. It will, however, augment whatever perceptions or beliefs people already have. Until it passes and people realize that 2018 didn’t trigger anything significant at all.

In Defense of Black Lives Matter

By The Prophet of Life

From The Book Black in America a Kindle e-book available worldwide through Amazon.

President Obama compared the Black Lives Matter to the Suffergete and Abolitionist movements. Newt Gingrich said that its very name black lives matter, was racist because it inferred that only black lives matter. The movement has drawn criticism for the radical things they have done to protest the perpetual slaughter of unarmed African American men and boys by armed, white police officers in America.

The Black Lives Matter movement does do more than just march down public sidewalks and in front of public buildings carrying protest signs and placards (although they do that too). The have blocked major public roadways with their bodies, shutting them down for hours. Some people among their group claiming to be their followers have gotten violent. The attack on the Dallas Police Department by a single, black assailant and the killings of two more African Americans at the hands of police officers this week, have exacerbated racial tensions. In my book Black in America, (available exclusively on Kindle) I wrote a piece of literature which I believe, explains why The Black Lives Matter Movement is called that. It Follows below:

Why We Say Black Lives Matter

When we say

Black Lives Matter

We are not saying that ONLY black lives matter

We do understand that All Lives Matter

And we are not negating that fact

When we say Black Lives Matter

We are issuing a call for JUSTICE

We are issuing a plea to stop the murder of our children

Who, as members of the human family, represent all of our children

And we wonder why we must call for justice

If we live in a Just Society

We wonder why there should even be a reason for us to call for justice

If we live in a Just Society

And we wonder why the blood of our children runs in the streets

Beneath the tainted shadow of racism

So next time you hear someone say

Black Lives Matter

Know that it is a call for justice

And think about

Why we need to call for justice

If we do, in fact,

Live in a Just Society

If you still think that the Black lives Matter movement is racist and that African Americans don’t have a real cause for concern about whether or not their men and boys will return alive, after leaving the house, and if you, after reading this article still believe that America actually is a Just Society then I suggest you ask yourself one more question. Would you have the same point of view if there was an epidemic of armed African American police officers killing unarmed white citizens?

Muhammad Ali, A Life that Impacted The World

By The Prophet of Life

For a time, he was one of the best known people in the world. He completely changed the sport of boxing. He changed his religion and his name at the height of his popularity. He even defied the U.S. Government when he was drafted to go to war. Muhammad Ali became an icon in sports, in the counterculture, in the African American Community and in the cult of Personality. He was a media sensation of his own making.

Born in Louisville KY in 1942, Cassius Clay, began boxing when a policeman suggested he do so to channel anger he had after someone stole his bicycle. By the time he was 19 He won a Gold Medal in boxing for the U.S. team in the 1960 Olympics. He entered professional boxing soon afterward and by 1963 amassed a 19-0 record. He had defeated all of the other contenders for the heavyweight crown and was scheduled to fight champion Sonny Liston.

Ali taunted Liston in the press everywhere he went. The press reported his exploits and taunts but few took him seriously and fewer thought he had any chance of beating Liston who was bigger and stronger than Ali. When the first blows began, Ali was a 7-1 underdog but his superior speed and powerful blows forced Liston to quit the match before the seventh round bell. At 22, Ali was the youngest boxer to beat a reigning Heavyweight Champion.

Ali was considered the greatest boxer of all time because he defeated every major boxer in what is considered the golden age of boxing. His emphasis on speed and colorful self-coined descriptions of his style like, “Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” captivated people. He revolutionized the sport, which had been dominated by gigantic men, of huge strength for decades. His gift of self-promotion, confidence, pride and his personality all played a part in making an Ali fight an entertainment spectacle that filled seats and garnered mass media coverage.

Ali was a unique and revolutionary figure in many ways. He touted pride for himself at a time when many black people lived under Jim Crow and Apartheid. He converted to Islam at a time when a majority of Black Americans were Christian. He even stood up to the might of the U.S. Government.

Ali refused to go into the army when conscripted during the height of the Viet Nam War. He refused on the grounds of being a conscientious objector. This was unheard of. Ali’s public popularity rapidly declined. He was jailed. He was stripped of his championship title and banned from boxing He appealed his incarceration all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and won. He was then reinstated into boxing but he lost four of his prime boxing years during the process.

Over the next decade, Ali won and lost the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship twice. He regained it from Joe Frasier and took it from George Foreman. Two of his fights the “Rumble in the Jungle” against Foreman and the “Thrilla in Manilla” against Frazier were epically successful internationally. Ali declined as a boxer after that but continued to be a success. He penned a best-selling book about his life. The book was made into a major movie which he starred in. There were other acting roles and media events he was part of. He even got Saddam Hussein to release hostages when he invaded Kuwait in the 1990’s.

Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1984. He was still active while battling the disease which he had for the rest of his life. He raised a lot of money for charity and garnered the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

There has never quite been another sports personality like Ali. In the heyday of his boxing career, he was able to control how he was presented by the media and in doing so, was able to control the public perception of  his persona. He was always colorful and controversial. He was both polarizing and inspirational. He never shrunk from a fight both in and out of the ring, no matter how daunting the odds. He broke many molds and became a unique individual whose existence had a global impact in many different fields. It is unlikely that there will ever be anyone quite like him again.
