Why Trump Won and What His Victory Means to America

By The Prophet of Life

There are a lot of people in the world who are shocked today. Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States of America. Some around the globe are saying things like “Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.” Others are saying nothing but feeling dread when they think about the future.

Donald Trump won the election because he tapped into an anger and frustration throughout America. There are plenty of Americans who don’t feel that the system is working for them. They are tired of career politicians who promise the moon but deliver gridlock. Who count on their vote but don’t give them a second thought at election time. That group is Donald Trumps constituency.

Donald Trump won as a Republican despite the fact that the party elite didn’t support him. He ran on a platform of Republican values and 9 of 10 Republicans ended up voting for him as well as people who usually vote for fringe independent party. The Republican party members of congress will likely support him but if they don’t or if there is still gridlock, Trump can always tap into the rage of his constituency and form a third party and run his own slate for congress. If he did that, it could likely transform America from a two party to a three party system.

Now Trump calls on all Americans to bind the wounds of the past and seek unity. I am sure that many Americans would like to do that but can they leave behind their animosity and do that? When it comes to this new concept of a Trump Presidency, many Americans are hoping for the best but fearing the worst.

At its best, A Trump Presidency could reshape America into a more prosperous nation with full employment and a better life for all. Trump could bring new ideas and new approaches to solving America’s problems which, if tried, might just work.

At its worst, a Trump Presidency could become an economic disaster, stand by as Russia takes over Eastern Europe and the Middle East and China takes back Taiwan and overruns parts of Asia. It could set back advancements against global warming as well as advancements made by every minority group, immigrants and Women’s Rights. You could expect a Supreme Court that would likely repeal Roe Vs Wade and Reverse Gay Marriage. You could see the rise of a law and order police state where minorities continue to be gunned down or a war that drafts our youth.

A Trump America could be a place where pollution is rampant, abortion is illegal, the military industrial complex is reborn, differences aren’t respected or tolerated and hate crimes rise. It could be an America where millions have lost their health care, had their social security cut or pensions diminished or are just plain broke. Most of America will live in apartments because homes will be out of reach for an average American. More people will have jobs but they will not pay enough to afford a house and college will be out of reach for most children.

At both its best and worst, Trumps America will be a great place to be rich.

How to Make the U.S. Presidential Debates More Like Actual Presidential Debates

Editor’s Note: Guest writer Mark Wilkins is a terrific author who known as A Storyteller. He writes collections of short stories on Kindle e-books including A Week’s Worth of Fiction, Classroom Confessions, Stories of The Supernatural and Slices of life. His stories range from humorous to downright frightening. He has proposed a rather outrageous but practical solution to the sad state of political debates.

By Mark Wilkins

If you have been listening to the U.S. Presidential Debates you should have noticed that the two candidates spend more time talking about their opponent’s character flaws than addressing the issues that the entire Presidential Campaign are supposed to be about. I have a very simple solution that will incentivize both Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton to talk about the issues and their plans for addressing them, than about their opponent’s faults.

At the beginning of each debate, show a black line drawing of each candidate on plain white paper. Every time a candidate goes off topic and begins to talk about their opponent’s faults, drown them out by playing circus music. Then,  change camera focus to the line drawing of them and show a hand drawing a colorful clown attribute on the face of their line drawing. Do this every time a candidate goes off topic or hammers their opponent. See which candidate goes “Full Bozo” first.

This should work to force each candidate to spend most, if not all of their time actually debating the issues and explaining their plans for addressing them. Neither candidate would want to be thought of as being a clown. Neither candidate will want to have the  end result of the debate be that they went “Full Bozo”.

Don’t show the candidates shaking hands and congratulating each other, at the end of the debate. Instead, close with a shot of the two line drawings side by side so that the American People can see their real choices for President this election cycle. Then play circus music.

In Defense of Black Lives Matter

By The Prophet of Life

From The Book Black in America a Kindle e-book available worldwide through Amazon.

President Obama compared the Black Lives Matter to the Suffergete and Abolitionist movements. Newt Gingrich said that its very name black lives matter, was racist because it inferred that only black lives matter. The movement has drawn criticism for the radical things they have done to protest the perpetual slaughter of unarmed African American men and boys by armed, white police officers in America.

The Black Lives Matter movement does do more than just march down public sidewalks and in front of public buildings carrying protest signs and placards (although they do that too). The have blocked major public roadways with their bodies, shutting them down for hours. Some people among their group claiming to be their followers have gotten violent. The attack on the Dallas Police Department by a single, black assailant and the killings of two more African Americans at the hands of police officers this week, have exacerbated racial tensions. In my book Black in America, (available exclusively on Kindle) I wrote a piece of literature which I believe, explains why The Black Lives Matter Movement is called that. It Follows below:

Why We Say Black Lives Matter

When we say

Black Lives Matter

We are not saying that ONLY black lives matter

We do understand that All Lives Matter

And we are not negating that fact

When we say Black Lives Matter

We are issuing a call for JUSTICE

We are issuing a plea to stop the murder of our children

Who, as members of the human family, represent all of our children

And we wonder why we must call for justice

If we live in a Just Society

We wonder why there should even be a reason for us to call for justice

If we live in a Just Society

And we wonder why the blood of our children runs in the streets

Beneath the tainted shadow of racism

So next time you hear someone say

Black Lives Matter

Know that it is a call for justice

And think about

Why we need to call for justice

If we do, in fact,

Live in a Just Society

If you still think that the Black lives Matter movement is racist and that African Americans don’t have a real cause for concern about whether or not their men and boys will return alive, after leaving the house, and if you, after reading this article still believe that America actually is a Just Society then I suggest you ask yourself one more question. Would you have the same point of view if there was an epidemic of armed African American police officers killing unarmed white citizens?

Trump Might Not Be Running For President

By The Prophet of Life

The race for Republican Nominee for the U.S. Presidency is in full circus mode. The sideshow performers have left the ring. The clowns have taken center stage and are juggling and dancing. And the ringmasters of the Republican Party are trying to find a way to sideline their star performer. It’s all funny & entertaining stuff. The joke however, may be on the audience because the star performer may not be running for President at all.

Recently Presidential Candidate Donald Trump was asked a questions about the military. He was asked: “What happens when the military refuses to do what you tell them to because the things you tell them to do (like water boarding) are illegal.” Mr. Trumps response was something along the lines of (I am paraphrasing here), “Listen, people in the Middle East are cutting people’s heads off, I think that we should go beyond water boarding and when it comes to the military doing what I tell them to do, believe me, they will do what I tell them to. That’s leadership, getting people to do what you tell them to do.”

Mr. Trump likely thought he was answering a question about water boarding or the military but, according to his answer, what he was really answering was a question about his view of leadership. His answer reveals that Mr. Trump is not running for President of the United States at all. He is actually running for CEO of the United States.

It comes down to perception of Presidential Power. The great Presidents, the most effective Presidents have realized that the U.S. Presidency is a collaborative endeavor. An effective president works with congress to get things done. An ineffective president fights with congress or does nothing to break congressional gridlock. According to his answer to this question and other things he has said and done on the campaign trail, it appears that Mr. Trump, if elected will likely be an ineffective President.

A CEO tells people what to do and they do it or they get fired. President Trump would not be able to utter his Apprentice catchphrase (which he unsuccessfully tried to trademark by the way) of “You’re Fired!” to Congress. He might negotiate some good trade deals but they won’t be with Mexico where he is reviled both by the people and the government. They won’t be with China because China is playing the long game. They negotiate for China’s best interests 100 years from now not what they need now, and the Chinese don’t appear to care much for him either. When it comes to actual laws and policies he might want to implement, if Congress isn’t on board, they will be dead in the water.

I believe that those who vote for Trump for President will likely be wasting their vote because what they will get will be a CEO. I believe they will get a CEO without diplomatic skills, any kind of experience in governance or public service and without a history of collaborative leadership. They will get a CEO who has managed to piss off cultures and nations America must work collaboratively with to insure our security, economic stability and standing in the world. If this happens, perhaps America will be great again but only in our own minds. If this happens, God help America because our President certainly won’t.

Is Donald Trump A Racist?

By The Prophet of Life

One of the hallmarks of racism is making general statements and / or judgments about or taking actions against an entire group of people based on the actions of a few members of that group. If you look at some of Donald Trumps statements in his bid for the Republican Presidential nomination based on this hallmark, then Donald Trump would appear to be a racist. His statements about Mexicans being criminals and rapists and about barring all people of the Islamic faith from entering the U.S.A. make him sound more like the Grand Dragon of the KKK than a serious candidate for the nation’s highest office. The problem is one never really knows whether Trump is just saying inflammatory things to grab headlines and keep himself relevant or if he is speaking from his heart.

Many Republicans like Donald Trump because he’s not afraid to speak his mind. They say he tells it like it is and doesn’t apologize for it. But, is Trump really telling it like it is? Or, is he just reflecting the frustrations of Xenophobic and racist white people who are afraid of sharing the American Dream with people who are different from them?

The media loves Trump because he’s always good for a sound bite. Sound bites dominate the media because they supposedly summarize an entire issue concisely. People have gotten used to sound bites and they have now become the new encyclopedia of knowledge on an issue despite the fact that they are often shallow, oversimplified and inflammatory in nature. In this sound bite world, people don’t like going into depth on an issue and prefer keeping the gory details to a minimum. In this sound bite world, Donald Trump is the perfect Presidential candidate.

Making headlines is Trump’s strong suit. Planning and follow through are his weaknesses. If you look at most of the things he says he will do if he gets in office they are shallow on details. He has been a great success in business but he is not running his presidential campaign like a business, unless you consider a circus a business that is applicable to governance. So far, his candidacy has done more to detract from the real substantive issues that should be discussed during this presidential campaign than it has to promote them.

The Office of The Presidency is a collaborative one. The Best Presidents have found a way to work with congress and get things done. It’s hard to imagine someone who owns a mega corporation and is used to telling people what to do, being effective in a position that requires working with people who don’t agree with you and having to constantly compromise. It’s hard to imagine someone who makes inflammatory and racist statements dealing effectively with the groups they have been insulting. It’s hard to imagine someone like that not making America the laughing stock of the entire world.

I guess the real proof of whether or not Donald Trump is effective at running for the Republican Candidate for President will come as the vote counts of State primaries are tallied. The proof of whether or not Donald Trump is effective at running for President will come during the Presidential Election of 2016 if he becomes the Presidential Candidate for the Republican Party. The answer to the question about whether or not Donald Trump is a racist can really only be answered by Trump himself. The answer to the question is he perceived as a racist is likely a resounding yes to a large number of people.

It has been said that running for the job of Presidency is different from actually being President. It has been said that people who win the job change. If Trump does win I hope to God that it is true for him because the Donald Trump I am seeing now is not Presidential material.

The Problem with Donald Trump

By The Prophet of Life

As everyone who hasn’t lived under a rock for the past several weeks knows, Real Estate Tycoon and Reality TV Star Donald Trump is running for Republican Party nomination as President United States of America. When one goes to his official website one gets a good idea of what his campaign is all about. It says: “Trump for President” followed by his campaign slogan “Make America Great Again”. There is one button that says Join Us and another that says Donate. There is a banner that says In The News which has headlines about the Trump campaign’s accomplishments.

There is nothing about Trump’s position on the main issues. There is no campaign platform. There is no vision for America. There is just the campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” and nothing about how Trump is going to make that happen. The website is just a glimpse into the problem with Donald Trump.

Trumps announcement that he is running for President was filled with what Trump is famous for, self-aggrandizement it seemed more like a commercial for how great Donald Trump is than the announcement of a candidate for the Republican Party’s selected Candidate for President. Perhaps he assumes he already has the nomination but the summer 2016 is a long way away and November 2016 is even longer.

His announcement also came with controversy as he made a statement that inferred that the majority of Mexicans are criminals and rapists. The statement stirred controversy among Latinos and Democrats and even drew the ire of members of the Republican Party who will totally lose the Hispanic vote in 2016 and perhaps beyond if they follow Trump’s lead. Rank and file Republicans are trying to defend Trumps statement saying things ranging from:  “He’s right”, to “He’s just saying what everyone else is thinking, the difference is HE has the guts to say it”.

Trump did try to clarify the things he said by citing case of a deported Mexican crossed back onto American soil and continued criminal activity but that was more damage control than an apology. He doesn’t seem to realize the pain and anger his statements have inflicted upon Mexican immigrants who have worked hard at jobs that pay crap just for a chance to live a better life. Mr. Trump himself is a first generation on his mother’s side and a second generation immigrant on his father’s side. Both his mother and grandfather came here from another country.  If he had thought about how he would feel if someone accused his grandfather of being a rapist, he would likely feel some of the anger and pain the people he slighted do, that’s if he would have thought about it before he said it which it appears, he never does.

Since his website doesn’t tell where he stands on the important issues of the day, the voting public can only go by comments he had made on these issues in the past and soundbites he makes on the campaign trail. Here is a rundown of where he stands by those standards.

Domestic Policy

The Economy

Balance the budget by cutting government programs, and cutting corporate taxes so more jobs can be created. Trump claims to be the jobs creation candidate. He won’t cut social security he will bolster it by bringing in more money. Most of his predecessors have bolstered social security by giving amnesty to large groups of illegal aliens many of whom are young, who are already here and will pay into social security for another 40 years, which balances out the number of seniors drawing money from it. Perhaps Trump will do it with all of the new jobs he is going to create by giving corporations, not voters, tax breaks.

Immigration:

Trump will make the border tougher to cross and will be stronger on deportation than other Presidents have been. He gives no specifics on how he is going to do this.

The Drug Epidemic:

Trump will legalize drugs and create revenue from taxing it. The Government has already done that with alcohol and it has taken us almost 100 years to get the resulting deaths and destruction from addictions to that somewhat under control.

Infrastructure:

Trump wants to rebuild America’s roads and bridges. He says his construction background has giving him the insight to build them for 1/3 of the cost everyone else is rebuilding them for. Will the work be done by Trump Construction? Last time I checked that would be a conflict of interest.

Supporting our Veterans:

Trump says no one will be as good to America’s veterans as he will. He has never said how he will do this. Trump never served in the military. He never fought in any wars unless you count real estate wars. It is possible that someone who has never served in the military could have the compassion to improve the treatment of veterans, and Trump has given millions to charity, a fact which he touts all the time. Giving money to charity doesn’t make you a compassionate person especially when you can write the money off on your taxes and especially when you constantly point out that you give millions to charity.

America’s Nuclear Stockpile:

Trump wants to update America’s nuclear stockpile. He says other nations (like Iran?) are updating theirs and we need to catch up. This could just be another ploy to help create jobs and bring more money to America which is, after all, the world’s top exporter of weapons.

Foreign Policy:

Terrorism:

Trump says that no one will be tougher on ISIS than he will. He says he will find a general with the intelligence and ingenuity of Patton and have him fix the military and set that guy loose on ISIS. Sound like a declaration of war and the commitment of American troops. This time, however, American troops will not be going into battle with ill equipped, ill trained fighters with crappy leadership but fighters who may be better equipped than they are.

Trade:

Trump has said that nations like China and Mexico are stealing our jobs. He has also said that America is treated poorly in trade deals. He says Japanese car companies are sending millions of cars here but no one in Japan drives a Chevrolet.  He says he is going to make American number one again. He doesn’t say how. The Japanese car companies are selling millions of cars here because Americans think they are built better than American made cars. If he wants to get the Japanese to buy more American cars perhaps he should first try and get more Americans to buy American cars.

Perhaps Trump doesn’t understand that the global economy is just that, a global economy. Sure, his company competes in markets other than America but approaching the global economy from the reference point of America is the greatest nation on earth and America always wins and everyone else loses doesn’t work. In the global economy, nations do well by out-thinking and out competing everyone else.  Gone are the days when one nation dictates terms and the rest follow in lock step. Trade deals are struck to benefit all of the nations involved and all of the nations involved have a say in how they are worded. The United States is a major player but not THE major player.

China is doing well globally, not because they have more consumers than anyone else but because they are the global leaders in the manufacture green technology, they are buying up natural resources across the globe and they are investing in developing economies. There are the type of things America used to do. China is doing well because they plan their economy with an eye towards what the world will be like in 100 years. America can’t even get a corporation to plan beyond a single quarter, or a national leadership that plans beyond four years into the future. If Mr. Trump wants to make America great, get America to do those things.

I am sure that Donald Trump is a brilliant man, there’s no way someone can become a billionaire by being stupid. I am sure he has a great business sense but in his world, he tells the people he works with what to do and they follow. The American Government doesn’t run like that. Donald Trump has no experience in governance of any Congressional District, State or nationally. This, by many will be seen as a flaw.

Donald Trump may be a brilliant man and may have some good ideas but his campaign hasn’t shown that Donald Trump. It has only shown us the Donald Trump of sound bites and inflammatory statements. It has shown us the Donald Trump long on self-aggrandizement and short on substance. The problem with Donald Trump is he hasn’t shown us anything that looks remotely presidential. Perhaps “All Fanfare and No Substance” would be a more fitting slogan for the Donald Trump for President Campaign we have seen so far.
