Stone Temple Pilots Lead Singer Scott Weiland was found dead on a tour bus last night. His new band Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts was at a stop over between gigs. Weiland was just 48 years old.

The Stone Temple Pilots were formed in Sand Diego California in 1989. Weiland and Bass Player Robert Deleo met at a Black Flag concert in Long Beach California in 1985. They formed a band and began building a fan base. After several name changes, the band Stone Temple Pilots emerged in 1989. They released a CD (Core) on Atlantic Records in 1992. The CD included the song “Plush”. That song became a hit and the CD peaked at #3 on the Billboard Album Charts. Other CD’s and successes followed and despite critics saying they were grunge imitators, their grunge / alternative Rock sound coupled with Weiland’s gravely voice Kept them in perpetual success through the 1990’s.

In 2002  STP broke up and Weiland formed the super group Velvet Revolver with Guitarist Slash and other members of Guns N Roses. They released a CD  (Contraband) and had a hit with the song Slither. Weiland quit Revolver and rejoined STP in 2008 until he was fired from the band in 2013.

Through the years, Weiland had problems with drug addiction, primarily to heroin which he used to help him cope with a bi-polar disorder. He was arrested and charged with crimes involving drugs a couple of times and both times he got probation. His distinctive gravely, growl will be missed.
