What is cool?

Recently, the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch said that he didn’t want people who weren’t cool buying his clothes. Despite the fact that it isn’t cool to use a double negative in a sentence (it’s just ignorant), the fact that he said something like that would deny him the right to wear anything from his own clothing line. The statement, as lame as it was, got me to thinking.

What is cool? How do most of us determine what “cool” is? There are many who say that cool is something you either have or don’t,. They say its natural and cannot be learned or taught. I disagree with some of that. First of all, cool is a matter of perception. What is or is not cool is different for different groups of people. Secondly, I think that what is cool can be analyzed and once analyzed, common factors among the cool can be isolated. Once isolated, they can be developed in anybody.

I’ve known a lot of cool people in my life. I have also known about media celebrities who are considered cool. I sat down and made a list of the factors many of them have in common. Here are the results. Most people considered cool are not trying to be cool, they are merely being themselves. They are independent minded. They don’t follow trends but because a part of their independence is having their own independent sense of style, they can influence or even start trends.

They are very often down to earth. They are often able to keep things in perspective and don’t get too caught up in themselves or the hype surrounding them. They not afraid to speak their mind but usually only on important issues .They are often selfless and give back. They are often involved in fund raisers or are spokespeople for charity. They often don’t show petty emotions in public. It is often that when cameras catch them being too stuck up or worried about their image, or having a tirade, especially about something self-centered or unimportant, that they instantly become uncool.

So, to recap, cool people are independent minded. They don’t follow trends and have their own sense of style. They are down to earth, selfless, and not afraid to speak their mind on important issues. They give back. Perhaps cool people are considered cool because they stand out from the crowd. If you want to be cool try cultivating some of these things. Even if you aren’t considered cool after that, at least you will have the consolation that you are a better person.
